wtf is a poetrySLAM?

The Poetry Slam was created in the 1980's by construction worker Marc "So What" Smith in Chicago, IL. In order to breathe new life into the local open-mic scene, Smith devised a way for poetry to appeal to more than just the hoity toity. A poetry slam is a competition of three-minute poems. Each poem/performance is ranked on a scale from 0.0 to 10.0 by three randomly selected judges in the audience. (In Normal) the slam may have one or two rounds. Poets should plan accordingly. At the finich, the poet with the most points wins.
To qualify for the Normal, IL Slam Final (which determines the team will represent Normal, IL at the National Poetry Slam), a poet must finish first or second twice during the Slam Season.
To keep that so-fresh feeling all year round, the Normal Slam has themed slams every fourth Tuesday. Themed slams consist of one round only, and all poems must be based on the theme. They're AWESOME!
